The sudden closure of May and Baker Sports and Social Club has left the community of Dagenham and Romford devastated.
Despite this site being of huge local significance, not just for its sporting activities and social club but also for its historical importance in the local community, Labour-run Barking and Dagenham Council have let this establishment close.
The Council claim that the money to keep the venue open because it was not in a position to subsidise an organisation that is “unable to generate enough income to cover its operational overheads”.
However, Barking and Dagenham Council have spent millions of pounds acquiring the Dagenham Heathway Shopping Mall, which is running a loss on investment for the Council and also borrowing hundreds of millions of pounds for high-rise tower blocks in Barking.
They say there is no money for anything, but when the Labour Party want to do something that fits their political agenda money is always found.
This cannot be right, Labour are destroying our history and heritage.
We cannot let them get away with this, urge the Council to support the May and Baker Sports and Social Club by signing our petition below.
