On Thursday 18th June Havering Council was informed that the Home Office had taken out a lease on the former Palms Hotel for use as a temporary asylum accommodation centre.
The site is along the A127 and is unsuitable for housing vulnerable people – being cut off from shops, schools, medical centres, and public transportation, all of which will be needed by vulnerable people. We have also been informed following an inspection by the London Fire Brigade the building requires extensive fire safety work, before it can open.
Therefore, we are petitioning the Home Office not to use the Palm Hotel to house vulnerable people on the grounds that these individuals are likely to require a high level of social support which simply cannot be met at this location. We are also requesting that all future Home Office commissioning activity within the Borough is undertaken after full discussion with Havering Council and the Clinical Commissioning Group.
